- The hydraulic lifter in a car's engine uses oil pressure to adjust a plunger and take up all the clearance in the valve train. This helps to ensure less engine noise and longer reliability, due to less wear and tear. Hydraulic lifters can begin to fail through normal use of a vehicle. It is compressed between the engine block and the cylinder head. The head gasket seals in the internal combustion process to make sure maximum compression is achieved and also keeps coolant and oil from mixing together as the two fluids travel from the engine block to the cylinder head. Therefore the cylinder head gasket, and lifters are an important part of your engine. They should always be in perfect condition and should be maintained properly.
