SERVICE: BMW N54 MSD80 To MSD81 DME Conversion & Programming
Please Note: This listing is for a Programming Service. You must send in your modules for this service to be completed.
Vehicle Compatibility
This service is specifically for the BMW N54 Engine. This engine is widely considered one of BMW's best platforms and is found in the following models:
BMW 135i
BMW 335i / 335xi
BMW 335is
BMW 535i / 535xi
BMW Z4 (N54 variants)
BMW X6 (N54 variants)
The Problem: Why your MSD80 Failed
The original computer managing your N54 engine (DME/ECU/ECM) is the MSD80. While the engine is great, this specific computer has well-documented internal weaknesses that fail due to age and high performance.
1. MOSFET Failure (Most Common)The MOSFETs on the MSD80 board are prone to failure. When they fail, your car will misfire severely and enter "Limp Mode." This usually affects one specific bank of cylinders.
2. PSU FailureThough rarer, the Power Supply Units (one per bank) can also fail, resulting in the exact same symptoms and error codes as a MOSFET failure.
Common Symptoms & Error CodesIf your MSD80 has failed, you are likely seeing the following codes:
Bank 1 Failure:
29CD Combustion Misfire, Cylinder 1
29CE Combustion Misfire, Cylinder 2
29CF Combustion Misfire, Cylinder 3
30BA DME digital motor electronics, internal failure
Bank 2 Failure:
29D0 Combustion Misfire, Cylinder 4
29D1 Combustion Misfire, Cylinder 5
29D2 Combustion Misfire, Cylinder 6
30BB DME digital motor electronics, internal failure
Tech Tip: Very often, a failed MOSFET is accompanied by a burnt ignition coil. We strongly recommend replacing your ignition coils when performing this upgrade to prevent immediate damage to the new unit.
The Solution: MSD81 Upgrade
The updated version of this computer, the MSD81, acts as a permanent fix. It features upgraded, stronger MOSFETs and PSUs and does not suffer from the weak points of the MSD80.
We offer a complete programming service to match a donor MSD81 to your vehicle's CAS module, effectively replacing your faulty MSD80 with a bulletproof MSD81.
How It Works (Instructions)
To perform this upgrade, you will need to mail the following items to us:
Your CAS Module (CAS3)
1 Working Keyfob (You do not need to send the metal blade insert)
Your Donor MSD81 DME (The replacement unit you want to install)
Finding the CAS3 Module:The CAS3 module is located underneath the steering wheel, directly on top of the pedals.
