For sale is this vintage Shore-Calnevar, Inc. Sportwheels Display Set, part number 8541-90, featuring four classic custom wheel designs:
* Typhoon
* Hurricane
* Tornado
* Cyclone
. This red-backed display was typically found on hobby shop counters or dealer sample boards and is now extremely hard to find intact.
BECAUSE THEY ARE SEALED IN IT'S ORIGINAL BOX, I CANNOT CONFIRM THE CONDITION BUT WE'VE OPENED UP 2 AND IT'S IN MINT CONDITION as displayed in the photos!
This vintage display remains factory sealed in its original packaging and includes the original cardboard display insert. Shore-Calnevar produced a variety of custom accessories during the 1960s for model car enthusiasts, and these Sportwheels sets have become increasingly difficult to find in original unopened condition.
Known Wheel Variation
During the process of photographing and cataloging several factory-sealed examples of this same part number, I discovered something worth noting for collectors.
There appear to be at least two known factory wheel design variations associated with this exact part number (8541-90). The most noticeable differences involve the Hurricane and Cyclone wheel designs, which have slightly different spoke profiles between examples, while the packaging and part number remain the same.
Because my remaining inventory is factory sealed, there is no practical way to determine which variation is inside a particular package without opening it and breaking the original factory seal. For that reason, I have chosen not to open any additional sealed examples.
The exact reason for these variations is not documented in any manufacturer literature that I have been able to verify. Possible explanations include production tooling revisions, multiple manufacturing molds, or running factory changes made during production while retaining the same catalog number. These possibilities are common in vintage manufacturing, but I cannot confirm which, if any, applies to these wheels.
For collectors interested in production variations, this may be an interesting aspect of these vintage Sportwheels sets.
Condition
This vintage Shore-Calnevar Sportwheels Model Display remains factory sealed in its original packaging inside the original outer box.
Based on the box’s we opened and the photos we took The original clear factory bag is in excellent condition. The wheels display exceptionally well with a bright chrome-like finish, and the red display retains outstanding color and graphics.
The original outer box is included and remains structurally sound. As expected for a vintage item over 60 years old, the box shows moderate age-related toning, light storage wear, minor edge and corner wear, and a few scattered marks from long-term storage. The original factory sealing tape remains present, although it shows typical aging and slight lifting in areas.
The clear outer bag displays normal age-related wrinkles, folds, and light scuffing consistent with decades of storage. These do not appear to affect the contents.
The original metal display hanger wires is visible through the side of the package and appears exactly as manufactured. The sealed box’s we have in stock do not appear to have been opened or resealed.
NOTE: we cannot confirm the exact variation that you will receive, since the box is not open… But I have included the photos of the two different variations that we have seen.
For size reference, the complete display measures approximately 12.5 inches wide by 5.5 inches tall, and each individual wheel measures approximately 2” inches in diameter (see photos with ruler and quarter for reference).
